“I want my portraits to create a space,” says the American artist Amy Sherald, “where blackness can breathe.” Sherald paints social portraits from staged photographs, her stylized figures set against bold backdrops as they sit, lounge, and hang out. Though her subjects are often Black, Sherald paints skin tones in gray scale, encouraging viewers to re-evaluate the complexities of race and representation. A selection of paintings from her latest solo show in London are now on view in Monaco. “Sharing these paintings in Europe,” Sherald observes, “is an opportunity for me to reflect on how the tradition of portraiture finds continuity as one of several lineages alive in my work.” A highlight is the diptych Deliverance (2022)—two men opposite each other, both of them soaring on colorful motorcycles that hang nonchalantly in the air. —Elena Clavarino
