Amy Sherald: The Heart of the Matter

Sept 10, 2019 – May 25, 2020

The artist Amy Sherald became a national presence in 2018, when her portrait of Michelle Obama was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery. It was a first in a number of ways. Here was the first black First Lady. And for an official portrait, it was fresh and aesthetically innovative, drawing on pop and postmodernism. Now, in her first New York solo show, Sherald’s full-scale portraits of everyday African Americans—they’re actually composites—are on view: deeply present, poised, and powerful. —L.J.
