Eric Garner said “I can’t breathe” 11 times before he was released from NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo’s illegal chokehold. In spite of the coroner’s report, which ruled Garner’s death a homicide, Pantaleo was never charged with a crime. Turning the theater into a jury box, this film stages the trial that never happened, bringing together eyewitnesses, Garner’s friends, his widow, and experts on deadly force and other relevant topics. The screening is followed by a Q and A with the filmmaker, Roee Messinger, and Garner’s widow, Esaw Snipes. —C.J.F.
