When Almost Famous was released in 2000—a loosely autobiographical comedy-drama written, directed, and produced by Cameron Crowe—the film was an immediate hit. Set in 1973, it’s about William Miller, a lonely rock-obsessed 15 year old who dreams of becoming a rock journalist, much to the chagrin of his mother. Tapped by Rolling Stone, Miller gets to cover the tour of a fictional band called Stillwater. A stunning professional groupie named Penny Lane takes the boy under her wing. For the movie, several original songs were written by Crowe’s then-wife Nancy Wilson, the guitarist of the rock band Heart. Two decades later, the musical has been adapted for Broadway. Crowe wrote the book and lyrics, Tom Kitt has provided original music and lyrics, and Jeremy Herrin directs. —Jensen Davis
