One of the wildest yet most disciplined imaginations in fashion belonged to the late Alexander McQueen. The British designer, born in 1969, was a comet. He cut his teeth in bespoke menswear and then shot into the haute couture, founding his own label in 1992 and accepting the top spot at Givenchy in 1996 (he left there in 2001). McQueen took his own life in 2010, at the age of 40, and the darkness in his vision, as well as the leaps of light, can leave one speechless. This exhibition opened at LACMA last spring and now comes to NGV International. It explores McQueen’s interdisciplinary impulse, his wide and deep frame of reference, and his artistic process. —Laura Jacobs
