The American conceptual artist Alex Da Corte, in his video and installation art, examines culture through pop presences such as Eminem and the Wicked Witch of the West. The artist approaches these subjects from an existential perspective, taking a deep dive into their untold complexities. Since the start of the pandemic, Da Corte has been focused on the Sesame Street character Big Bird. His multicultural take on the celebrated figure—which he sees as a symbol of diversity and community—will be placed on the Met’s rooftop, overlooking Manhattan’s Central Park. Reflecting on the work and on our emergence from the pandemic, Da Corte said, “It’s just onward. There’s much labor. There’s much thought. There’s work to be done as long as the sun lasts.” —Sabina Vitale
