Albert Watson: Dreaming—Pirelli 2019

Nov 29, 2019 – Feb 16, 2020
29 Liniya Vasil'yevskogo Ostrova, 2, St Petersburg, Russia, 199106

It’s hard to imagine a more provocative history of the culture than a collection of Pirelli calendars that goes all the way back to 1964, when the first one was produced. In that year the Italian car and motorcycle company put out a calendar shot by Robert Freeman in Majorca, Spain. Since then, the calendars have catalogued a year in time, involving photographers from Richard Avedon to Steve McCurry to Karl Lagerfeld, and subjects ranging from Iman and Naomi Campbell to Yoko Ono, Serena Williams, and Bono. A new exhibition showcases photographs from the 2019 edition of the calendar—shot by Albert Watson and featuring Misty Copeland, Alexander Wang, and others—while tracing the calendar’s more than half-century-long history. —J.V.
