“These paintings are made in such a way that they accept order only very reluctantly,” Albert Oehlen says of the work in this exhibition. “Eventually there is some form of order, but they strive against it.” Sounds like a push-pull most of us know all too well: chaos versus control. In these watercolors on canvas, Oehlen reduced his palette to certain colors, starting with a certain line, but then let spontaneity step in. The improvised brushwork practically jumps off the canvas. —E.C.
