Alan Michelson sees what is usually invisible. An advocate for America’s forgotten history, he analyzes geographical regions to better understand the indigenous populations that once inhabited them, and creates multimedia installations that evoke worlds of the past. In Wolf Nation, Michelson has caught red wolves in rural New York on a webcam. Projected across four screens, the wolves are filmed in horizontal spirals, reminiscent of the Indigenous traditions of mnemonically encoded sashes and beads. —E.C.
