In the first week of April 1998, the British and Irish governments were in the final negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement. That agreement largely ended The Troubles in Northern Ireland, a violent 30-year-long conflict in which Northern Ireland sought to become independent of the U.K. Owen McCafferty’s new play, Agreement, is set in the final four days of negotiations. Though fictionalized, the play spotlights historical figures, among them Northern Ireland’s secretary of state, Mo Mowlam; the Irish nationalist John Hume; and the U.S. mediator, George Mitchell. Bill Clinton’s brief appearance is portrayed by a light projection attached to a phone. —Jensen Davis
