Age of You: A Kaleidoscopic Exploration of the Extreme Self

Jan 28 – Aug 14, 2021
Jaddaf Waterfront, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Extreme Self, a forthcoming book co-authored by Shumon Basar, Douglas Coupland, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, submits that as the globe has become digitalized, inner worlds are also changing shape. With this theory as a springboard, 70 artists (Trevor Paglen, Anne Imhof, and Rachel Rose among them) have considered how social media, technology, and the pandemic are affecting The Self. Can humans adapt to such rapid change? What of the deep data fields that individuals now embody? Art, design, photography, filmmaking, and immersive installations explore the way perception is imperiled by a day-to-day life in which, as Coupland puts it, “the individual becomes an arena for monitoring, creating, and reinforcing stats.” —E.C.
