The Russian-born American art historian Leo Steinberg was known for eloquence on the subjects of Renaissance and modern art. He wrote about Michelangelo, Leonardo, Picasso, and Jasper Johns. What is less known is that he collected prints. He began in the early 60s, buying on the budget of a part-time professor. Over the years his collection grew until it reached more than 3,500 prints. Taken together, the works present a history of European printmaking. In this rare display, selection from Steinberg’s collection support his belief that prints are the “circulating lifeblood of ideas.” —E.C.
