A Way of Life

Elaine Cameron-Weir, Pupil of couture/4horsemen hairshirt, 2023.

Mar 7 – Apr 13, 2024

“I’m often drawn to objects with recognizable functions,” Elaine Cameron-Weir said in a 2019 interview of her large-scale installations, which utilize a mystifying medley of military, industrial, and scientific materials. “Then I infuse them with an element of mystery.” One of the artist’s sculptures features a leather trench coat and a steel fire door. Another combines a conveyor belt with liquid candles. The art that comes from these unorthodox pairings is both medieval and futuristic, the meaning tantalizingly out of reach. “I structure meaning the way that I think about poetry, in which you can put one word next to another without narrative,” said Cameron-Weir in 2022. “The meaning might be nonsensical or stupid or ineffective, but it will still do something.” —Paulina Prosnitz
