Yayoi Kusama’s mental struggles are a fact. The trouble began when she was a child in Matsumoto: she described seeing “flashes of light, auras, or dense fields of dots” that eclipsed her surroundings. The visions have stayed with Kusama throughout her seven-decade career, hounding her yet freeing her from a reliance on reality. In fact, critics have likened her to the Surrealists, who attempted to channel dreams and the subconscious into their art. In this Surrealism-themed exhibition, two-dimensional works from the beginning of Kusama’s career, many influenced by Japanese Nihonga painting, are on view. Also featured are acrylic paintings from her latest series, “My Eternal Soul.” —Elena Clavarino
