A Man in Full

Jeff Daniels in A Man in Full.

Like Bonfire of the Vanities, Tom Wolfe’s satirical novel A Man in Full deals with a “master of the universe” who attempts to stay afloat in high society amid economic and racial turmoil. Wolfe set his story in the late–20th century, in Atlanta, but Netflix’s glossy new adaptation is situated in the modern day. Jeff Daniels plays Charlie Croker, a real-estate mogul whose bank is demanding the repayment of its loan—$800 million! Operating from his opulent mansion alongside his young wife (Sarah Jones), Croker looks to his legal counsel, Roger White (Aml Ameen), to save him from financial ruin. White, however, is occupied with a racially-charged trial involving one of Croker’s employees as well as an ongoing and divisive Atlanta mayoral race. Translating Wolfe to the screen is no sure bet, but A Man in Full’s lead actors execute on his pressurized narrative. —Jack Sullivan
