Shaker design—elegance stern and simple—has inspired artists for over a century. Shakers also loved to dance, so choreographers from Martha Graham to Mark Godden to Martha Clarke have come under their spell. Godden’s 1992 ballet, Angels in the Architecture, which uses Aaron Copland’s magnificent Appalachian Spring as its score, fuses Graham modernism and the rapture of classical dance, sweeping the stage with a clean set of brooms. Also on this retrospective program: Agnes de Mille’s Rodeo and Toer van Schayk’s Seventh Symphony. —L.J.
