24 in 24: Concertos from the Inside

Streaming on Rachel Barton Pine

After three decades as a fixture on the international symphonic scene, the violinist Rachel Barton Pine has the core literature at her fingertips. Awaiting the resurrection of the Carnegie Halls and Musikvereins of the world, she reviews the essential violin concertos, one per week for 24 weeks, offering a rare inside view from the soloist’s perspective. Each segment includes chat, answers to viewers’ questions, and conversation with special musical guests—as well as the complete solo part of the work in question. Call it “Music Minus One” in reverse. From Vivaldi to Samuel Barber, virtually all the usual suspects are present and accounted for (though not Alban Berg). And in addition to three of the five Mozarts, there’s one of the 12 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, perhaps best known under his sobriquet, the Black Mozart. —M.G.
