The main event of this annual showcase for Christian Thielemann and the lustrous Staatskapelle Dresden was to have been Puccini’s valedictory Turandot, starring Anna Netrebko as the Chinese princess for whom princes risk their necks, her husband Yusif Eyvazov as the Tartar prince who solves her lethal riddles, and Golda Schultz as the slave girl Liù, whose heart is bigger than the two others’ put together. Bowing to pandemic realities, the stars have been redeployed for a Gala Concert instead. Caveat emptor: program to be announced. The weekend’s other attractions include the Mozart Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), Denis Matsuev in the Grieg Piano Concerto, and a program under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, featuring Ravel, Schumann, and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, with the magisterial Hilary Hahn as soloist. —M.G.
