You might confuse the Tracy Anderson Method with an especially fit cult. It’s actually an exercise program involving a choreographed series of movements that Anderson designed in the early 2000s. A membership soon became “a status symbol, the fitness equivalent of waterfront property,” wrote Xochitl Gonzalez in The Atlantic. And it quickly drew Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, and their admirers. In a room heated to 95 degrees, devotees pulse through seemingly endless repetitions, sometimes dancing, sometimes holding light weights, all in pursuit of a Tracy Anderson body. She eventually expanded her domain, with studios in Manhattan; Los Angeles; Sag Harbor; Water Mill; Madrid; London; Coral Gables, Florida; and Bozeman, Montana—and now prefers to call herself a “wellness pioneer.” She’s confident in her clients’ loyalty. “They’re not going to go anywhere else,” she says. “They know how smart I am.” Now 50, Anderson is a mother of two and newly married, for the third time, to businessman Chris Asplundh. Here, she shares the secrets to her very particular nighttime routine.
WHEN DO YOU START GETTING READY FOR BED?
Sleep is so important to me that I make sure I’m not doing anything to disrupt it throughout the second part of my day. I used to drink more when I was younger. It has to be a real celebration for me to have any kind of alcohol after five P.M.Exercise, alcohol, caffeine … Basically, I won’t do any stimulants past early afternoon. And I’ll really pamper myself to help sink into exhaustion.
