Sigalit Landau: The Burning Sea

Sigalit Landau, Strand, 2007–2002.

Oct 6, 2022 – June 17, 2023
Derech Ruppin, Jerusalem, Israel

“These waters are like a laboratory,” the Israeli artist Sigalit Landau once told The Times of Israel. She is referring to the salt-saturated flats of the Dead Sea. Landau was born in Jerusalem in 1969 but spent several years in the U.K. and then in New York, where she began experimenting with sculpture, video, photography, and installation. While she was away, home was on her mind. Moving back to Tel Aviv in the early 2000s, the Dead Sea’s grandeur and its doom captured Landau’s attention: she began making sculptures with the water. Wading in, Landau immerses textiles and objects in the salt-dense sea, creating glittering, ghostly, salt-encrusted artworks. A selection of these otherworldly pieces is on view here, along with a new video trilogy. —Elena Clavarino
