Andrew Rannells arrived in New York from Omaha the way every showbiz hero does: young, hungry, and full of Midwestern gumption. It took him several years to land his first notable role on Broadway, in Hairspray, and a few more to originate the part of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon. The wider public came to know Rannells as Hannah Horvath’s bitchy best friend in Lena Dunham’s Girls, and, most recently, he held his own opposite Allison Janney in HBO’s Emmy-nominated movie Miss You, Love You. Next up: a guest spot on the Netflix hit Nobody Wants This, with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Here, Rannells discusses his Midwestern food tastes, coming out to his family, recovering from jealousy, and why being onstage is the “greatest feeling in the world.”
MORNING ROUTINE: My partner, Tuc [Watkins], and I have 13-year-old twins, so during the school year, it’s all about getting them out the door in one piece. We try to wake up earlier than the kids to have some time together. We mostly have coffee and do Wordle, but it makes for an easier start than to launch straight into “Why are you wearing that to school?”
