Troutbeck

Troutbeck in the spring.

515 Leedsville Rd, Amenia, NY 12501, United States

Troutbeck isn’t just an idyllic getaway in the Hudson Valley. The estate is also an entry point to the region’s rich creative history. Since the 1700s, it’s housed a revolving door of distinguished artists, writers, and activists: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Langston Hughes were just some of its guests, and W. E. B. Du Bois hosted N.A.A.C.P. meetings at the estate. “How appropriate that so tremendous a thing should have taken place in the midst of so much quiet and beauty there at Troutbeck,” Du Bois wrote. Now refurbished as a hotel, it continues to offer guests a creative retreat. And its wide range of amenities—think pools, gun room, picnic sites—means one really doesn’t have to venture off-site. —Maggie Turner
