Set among the red-rock buttes of Monument Valley, Goulding’s Lodge began as a trading post opened by Harry and “Mike” Goulding in the 1920s. The couple later persuaded director John Ford to shoot Stagecoach here, helping turn the valley into one of Hollywood’s defining visions of the American West; today, the Navajo Nation–owned resort has rooms overlooking the buttes, a museum in the original trading post, and the Stagecoach Restaurant, where the fry bread is worth ordering.
