Nearly three decades after Tom Noonan adapted his Off-Broadway play into a film that won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, What Happened Was… is back on a New York stage. It’s easy to see why Ian Rickson wanted to revive it. The play consists of two co-workers, one awkward dinner, and a Manhattan apartment. The whole thing unfolds in real time, small talk curdling slowly into something far more exposing as two people who can’t quite connect keep trying anyway.
