Vivian Maier: In Color

Dec 2, 2021 – May 8, 2022
1601 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614, United States

Vivian Maier, a domestic worker for 40 years, was quiet and soft-spoken, never stepping out of line. But she did have a camera. In 2007—two years before her death in 2009—Maier missed payments on her storage space and its contents went up for auction: 100,000 negatives were split among three collectors. Maier had taken countless photos of suburban Chicago while walking the children or wandering on her own. A child in the sunlight, a passerby eating an ice cream, a newspaper swept up by the wind—she snapped what caught her eye. Maier is now internationally recognized. This exhibition presents 65 color images from the 1950s to the 70s, many for the first time ever. —E.C.
