Growing up in Brazil, Vik Muniz studied reproductions of famous artists and dreamed of someday seeing the originals. In 1983, when he moved to the U.S. in his early 20s and finally saw the originals, an exploration began. What’s in the space between our experience of the real thing and its replication? Between the fact and the facsimile? For 30 years, Muniz has pursued answers. This series, which looks at Cubism and the work of Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Georges Braque, sees Muniz playing in a realm of reverberating planes. —Elena Clavarino
