Untold: Chess Mates

Hans Niemann in Untold: Chess Mates.

In 2022, the 31-year-old Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen faced off with the relatively unknown 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann—and lost. The upset made headlines and spurred one particularly strange conspiracy theory online: it began to be said that Niemann had used remote-controlled vibrating anal beads to win. Niemann accused Carlsen and the owners of the Web site chess.com of conspiring against him (Chess.com was in the process of merging with Carlsen’s chess company), while Carlson maintains that Niemann cheated (he handily defeated Niemann in a later rematch). A new episode of the Netflix docuseries Untold, which digs into sports stories, unpacks the bizarre he-said-he-said through interviews with both players, the chief executives of chess.com, and other grandmasters. —Paulina Prosnitz
