“It’s about originality,” Tsuyoshi Maekawa explains. “It’s no good if you imitate someone else.” And Maekawa never has. He stretches the limits of painting, creating distorted, sculptural canvases. Born in 1936, Maekawa was one of the radical Japanese artists who called themselves the Gutai. The group, founded in 1954, was devoted to experimentation and originality. Today, Maekawa’s works are minimalist, with a strictly neutral color palette that allows the texture of his materials (usually burlap or hemp) to sing. This exhibition presents paintings from over six decades. —Thalia Bonas
