The world had forgotten about Wiletta Mayer. She’s the lead character in Trouble in Mind, a play by Alice Childress that took to the stage in 1955, off-Broadway, and won the Obie Award for Best Original Off-Broadway Production. Mayer is a smart, stylish Black woman who’s been an actress for years. She knows that racism in the theater is pervasive, and she’s spent her life navigating its currents, following set rules and strategies for survival. Once again, she’s dealing with a condescending white director. Trouble in Mind was scheduled for a 1957 run on Broadway, yet it didn’t happen. But it’s happened now, and Childress’s funny, searing, moving play about race, art, and power is as fresh as a daisy—speaking directly to the fraught dynamics of 2021. —E.C.
