Toronto Biennial of Art

Sept 21 – Dec 1, 2019

What does it mean to be in relation? This is the central question that artists—Canadian, Indigenous, and international alike—have been invited to explore at the inaugural edition of Toronto’s Biennial. Here’s the context: Toronto’s shoreline is ever-changing, and in a world that is increasingly anthropocentric (Merriam-Webster: “considering human beings as the most significant entity of the universe”), how is the shoreline understood in relation to humans? To nature? To the future? Repurposed public spaces, buildings, train stations, and museums will be open along the waterfront, all places in which to ponder “The Shoreline Dilemma.” —E.C.
