Tony Oursler: Black Box

Jan 23 – May 16, 2021
No. 80, Meishuguan Rd, Gushan District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan 804

Tony Oursler was born in 1957, just as television was invading American homes. “My early idea of what could be art for my generation,” he has said, “was an exploded TV.” He went with the idea, moving video from the two-dimensional screen and projecting it into gallery spaces to make lifelike sculptural environments. Oursler has studied the rise of mass media, and with a touch of satire he explores the unknown effects of television on the darkest corners of human consciousness. Oursler’s first major museum exhibition in Asia showcases video installations, experimental films, and cinema work from four decades of his career. —E.C.
