Thomas Houseago: Lovers

Thomas Houseago, Still Life, 2023.

Sept 16, 2023 – Mar 10, 2024
2350 Longteng Ave, Xuhui, China

Thomas Houseago was born in Leeds, England, in 1972, and raised by a single mother who was committed to culture. After a year’s study at Jacob Kramer College, he received a grant to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. As a young man, Houseago lived in Brussels for eight years, supporting himself with his art, then up and moved to Los Angeles. In 2006, his primal, powerful work was discovered by collectors. Houseago has now crossed into his 50s, and for his first solo show in China, he’s recreated his studio, filling it with sculptures both abstract and figurative, and with paintings and drawings. “Some of the works are raw and intense,” he says, “and as much about the action of painting or carving as about the images. I hope people will be able to move freely between these ideas and experiences, and through my artistic journey.” —Elena Clavarino
