The archive artist Theaster Gates has created an immersive three-chapter tour on the first floor of Shanghai’s historic Prada mansion. He initially positions himself as a guest, and in six showcases presents the recurring themes of his practice: a reuse of materials, an interest in collections, and an examination of the stereotyped images imposed on Black communities. In the second chapter, Gates has reconstructed his potter’s workshop, but his absence here makes him a ghost. In the third chapter, Gates establishes himself as the mansion’s benevolent host: among furniture and cushions, his work is casually arranged. —E.C.
