One of Roald Dahl’s scarier novels, The Witches, imagines a world that contains female demons who hate children and are plotting to turn them all into mice. The narrator is a seven-year-old English boy who has recently lost his parents. He lives with his Norwegian grandmother, who tells him tales of these witches and their ringleader, the Grand High Witch. When the boy and his grandma go on vacation, they happen to stay at the very hotel where the witches are hosting their annual meeting. The little boy must thwart the witches’ sinister plan. In 1990, the book was turned into a film that starred Anjelica Houston as the Grand High Witch. A 2020 remake saw Anne Hathaway in the role. Now comes the first musical adaptation of the classic. The Olivier Award-winning Lucy Kirkwood provided the book and lyrics, and the West End veteran Katherine Kinglsey is the Grand High Witch. —Jensen Davis
