From 1976 to 1990, the Hunterian’s director, Frank Willett, made a series of acquisitions that built a rich collection of African art. Spanning 300 years, the pieces include ancestor masks by Yoruba artists in Nigeria, carved musical instruments, ritual garments, and other ancient artifacts. Since then, the museum has gone on to acquire work by contemporary artists such as Alberta Whittle, Lubaina Himid, and Jimmy Robert. “Every time we go into the store,” Dominic Paterson, the Hunterian’s curator of contemporary art told The Art Newspaper, “we’re struck by how amazing the objects are.” With this exhibition, which is exhibiting older African art together with contemporary pieces, the curators ask, “Is there a way in which we need all these histories, all these objects, to reconnect our sense of common humanity?” —Elena Clavarino
