It’s 1975 and the Vietnam War is nearing its end. Saigon is falling and South Vietnamese forces are seeking asylum in the United States. In The Sympathizer, two of these refugees are the General (Toan Le) and his right-hand man, Captain (Hoa Xuande). The problem? Captain is a communist spy, sent from North Vietnam to infiltrate the enemy’s secret police. He’s made it through the war undetected, fooling even Robert Downey Jr., who appears in a variety of roles in the miniseries. But traveling to Los Angeles with his secret spells new challenges, not least the racism he experiences upon arrival. Humor and tension abound in Park Chan-Wook’s black comedy, which also happens to be beautifully (if sometimes abstractly) filmed. —Jack Sullivan
