In 1995, the Irish playwright Sebastian Barry wrote The Steward of Christendom, its story loosely based on his great-grandfather’s life. The fictional Thomas Dunne, like Barry’s great-grandfather, lands in a psychiatric hospital in the early 1930s, after years serving as the chief of the Dublin police. Half the play is set in the facility, the other half in flashbacks and memories, mostly of his time during the 1922 Irish Civil War. This revival is directed by Louise Lowe. The Irish actor and director Owen Roe steps into the role of Dunne. —Jensen Davis
