Even those who haven’t seen The Sound of Music know the song “Do-Re-Mi.” The last musical written by the storied team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and more), this one is certainly the most widely loved. Set in 1938, it begins when Maria, a passionate but distracted young postulant, is sent to be governess to the seven children of a wealthy widower, Captain von Trapp. He’s planning to marry a Baroness but is falling in love with Maria; meanwhile, Austria is in the process of accepting Germany’s Nazi agenda. The director Adam Penford helms Chichester Festival Theatre’s first production of the musical. Gina Beck, who looks shockingly like Julie Andrews—Maria in the 1965 film—takes on the role here. —Jensen Davis
