The Sleeping Beauty

Nov 9–10, 2019
Theatre Square, 1, Sankt-Peterburg, Russia, 190000

An absolute must. The Mariinsky Theatre’s magnificent restoration of the original 1890 production of The Sleeping Beauty, unveiled in 1999, was a world event in classical dance. Clocking in at four hours, with three intermissions, it’s a magical mystery tour through Petipa and Tchaikovsky’s ballet-féerie. Sergei Vikharev restored Petipa’s choreographic text using notation from the Harvard Theatre Collection. The original costumes, designed by Ivan Vsevolozhsky—who was the force behind that first Beauty—are intoxicating. —L.J.
