The Mariinsky Theatre has two productions of The Sleeping Beauty in repertory. This one is Konstantin Sergeyev’s 1952 production, which has a dusty, Disney air about it. In 1999, the Theatre restored the original 1890 production of Beauty. Forced to choose between them, many Russians prefer Sergeyev’s, the sentimental favorite. This performance honors Yuri Soloviev (1940–1977), one of the company’s greatest dancers—plush, purity, and aplomb all in one package. He was a divine Prince Désiré. —L.J.
