“Wilder’s script is prescient and heartbreaking and totally bonkers,” the writer Ethan Lipton says about Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1943. Lipton has reimagined the play as a musical, bringing song to the story of the Antrobus family, who have been alive for 5,000 years, living in a continuous state of existential dread. They weather catastrophe after catastrophe, never arriving at that happily-ever-after place of peace that humans somehow think is achievable.
