Mozarteans are aware that Così fan tutte (Thus Do All Women) bears the alternate title La scuola degli amanti (The School for Lovers). Do we scent a thematic link to this Salieri opera, which preceded Così by more than a decade? From its premiere in Venice in 1778, La scuola de’ gelosi went on to conquer all Europe; in 1783, it arrived in Vienna, Mozart’s turf, with the future Figaro and Susanna of his yet unwritten Le nozze di Figaro prominent in the cast. By the early 19th century, La scuola de’ gelosi had found its way to some 60 stages from Lisbon to Moscow. To catch it today, you’ll need to fly to the northeastern corner of the Czech Republic, likely with a connection in Warsaw, on the other side of the Polish border. —M.G.
