“Time rushes by, love rushes by, life rushes by, but the red shoes go on.” Boy do they ever! This Powell and Pressburger postwar masterpiece, based on a short story by Hans Christian Andersen, swept the world into its vision of art as life. The movie’s use of color is mesmerizing, and its story of a ballerina forced to choose between her art and her heart (i.e., her husband) reverberates through the decades. Girls still see The Red Shoes and decide that they, too, must dance. Some call the movie “camp,” but if you know anything about ballet, it’s spot-on. This exhibition features 100 previously unseen costume and production designs, scripts, behind-the-scenes photographs and posters, and—wow—the iconic red pointe shoes that were used in the film. The exhibition also includes personal items owned by the ballerina Moira Shearer, who was indelible in the role of Victoria Page. The gallery is designed to bring the film’s cinematic tour de force, “The Ballet of The Red Shoes,” to life. —Laura Jacobs
