“We never sought to build the biggest house in America. It just kind of happened,” Jackie Siegel says in The Queen of Versailles, the 2012 documentary about a couple who thought big, bigger, biggest. She was the epitome of the American Dream: a computer engineer turned Mrs. Florida turned wife of the billionaire David Siegel. He’d built Westgate Resorts into the world’s largest timeshare company and she was his trophy. “There’s 30 years between us, but he doesn’t need Viagra,” she quips in the film. The story begins with the Siegels building a 90,000-square-foot mansion, featuring two tennis courts, 10 kitchens, and 30 bedrooms, only to watch their fortune unravel during the 2008 financial crisis. Directed by Lauren Greenfield, the documentary has now been reimagined as a Broadway musical, starring Kristin Chenoweth as Jackie and F. Murray Abraham as David.
