Inua Ellams describes his 2019 play The Half-God of Rainfall as “Nigeria’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers.” The millennia-spanning epic focuses on Demi, born in Nigeria and part Greek god—his mother is a mortal and his father is Zeus. Demi has a very human ambition: he wants to play in the N.B.A. But in this myth-inflected world, the gods have banned the divine and semi-divine from playing mortal sports. Gods, it turns out, are petty men who are jealous that athletes have worshipping fans. When Demi becomes the star point guard for the Golden State Warriors, he’s forced to battle Zeus.
