Last weekend, the Grand Egyptian Museum had an opening just as grand as its name, with dancers in ornate pharaonic costumes, fireworks, drone shows, and glitzy guests such as Spain’s King Felipe VI and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany. Two decades in the making, the $1 billion museum of nearly 24,000 square meters—located close to the Pyramids of Giza, just outside of Cairo—is the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. It houses around 57,000 artifacts; the Tutankhamun exhibition alone accounts for 5,000 of those. Calling this place a treasure trove is an understatement. —Carolina de Armas
