While true crime podcasts are often guided by a smooth, sanitized voice, the host of The Girlfriends sounds more like your middle-aged aunt reminiscing about her dating life in the 1990s while nursing a glass of chardonnay. I recommend picking up a glass yourself because the story Carole Fisher tells gets increasingly ominous. For a few months in the mid–90s, Fisher dated a successful and charismatic surgeon named Bob Bierenbaum, who, to all appearances, was the total package. After several erratic outbursts, the relationship came to an end, but not before Fisher learned that Bierenbaum’s ex-wife, Gail Katz, had gone missing several years earlier and was presumed dead. Decades later, she teams up with another ex-flame of Bierenbaum’s to investigate Katz’s fate, and the man behind it. —Paulina Prosnitz
