Cross court racket sports are having a moment in mass media. Challengers claimed tennis, Marty Supreme claimed ping pong, and The Dink has claimed their black sheep sibling—pickleball. In the new show Jake Johnson plays Dusty Boyd, a washed-up former pro tennis player who does the unthinkable and reluctantly takes up the paddle sport adored by retirees. Inspired by goofy comedies of the mid-aughts—Dodgeball or Step Brothers—the popcorn film offers a rare escape from real-life divisiveness. “I wanted to make a movie that feels a little old school, there’s no messaging, it’s not trying to teach people anything,” Johnson told The Guardian.
