The Curse

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder in The Curse.

Streaming on Hulu

The Curse may be the most awkward television series ever made, yet I could not stop watching. A happily married couple based in Española, New Mexico, hopes to turn their community-minded, eco-friendly, house-flipping business into an HGTV reality show named Fliplanthropy. Except there are unspoken tensions between the pair (Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone), they are actively gentrifying the neighborhood, and their producer (Benny Safdie) wants to turn them against each other for entertainment value. Fielder and Safdie, who wrote and produced the show, are a match made in heaven; they combine the former’s love of discomfort, as seen in The Rehearsal, with the latter’s addiction to stress, as seen in Uncut Gems and Good Time. Emma Stone’s character, though narcissistic and frustratingly unaware, is nevertheless gripping. The Curse repeatedly makes you wince, but also leaves you wanting more. —Jeanne Malle
