A cross between Bridgerton (2020) and Pride and Prejudice (2005), Apple TV’s The Buccaneers imposes a contemporary tonality upon its 19th-century love triangles, dukes, balls, love letters, and of course, a musclebound man emerging from a body of water. Based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel, the narrative follows a group of New York socialites in the 1870s who cross the pond for England’s debutante season, ready to trade their fortunes for a titled husband. Young and flush with new money, the girls struggle to find their footing within the strict and mysterious codes of English society. The show stars Kristine Froseth as a Lizzy Bennett-esque heroine—smart, fearless, and opinionated. There’s romance, but the heart of The Buccaneers is the female relationships and the stories of female endurance. The costumes are exquisite, the setting in Scotland is breathtaking, and the soundtrack features Taylor Swift. —Paulina Prosnitz
